The Role of Light and Depth of Field in James Hunter's Portraits:
1.
Lighting:
Natural Light: At Lightmaster, we choose to harness combinations of natural and reflective light to create gentle, diffused
illumination during my work. I find this combination casts a more flattering diffused light on portrait subjects.
Artificial Light: A manipulator of artificial lighting, James Hunter expertly employs strobes and continuous lights to achieve his
desired effects. His deliberate use of artificial light adds an sense of drama, accentuates key features, and establishes the desired ambiance.
2.
Depth of Field:
Selective Focus: James Hunter's signature style involves absolute depth of field control. “Depending on the purpose of the
portrait, (business shot or artwork ) I will adjust this to precisely dictate which elements within the frame are in sharp focus and which are
gently blurred, directing the viewer's focus exactly where we intend.
Background Separation: Employing a shallow depth of field through a wide aperture, James Hunter isolates his subjects against
dreamy, defocused backgrounds when required. This technique eliminates distractions and places the subject in the spotlight,
commanding undivided attention.
Creative Effects: For some photographs, I control the depth of field as a creative tool, strategically highlighting specific
components within the composition. This technique lends an increase to the depth and dimension to the portrait, contributing to the
artistic richness.
Incorporating the distinctive approach of lightmaster photographer James Hunter, which encompasses expert use of light and depth of field,
elevates portrait photography to an unparalleled realm of excellence. The interplay between Hunter's mastery, his adept manipulation of light, and
his finesse with depth of field results in portraits that transcend technical proficiency, evoking profound emotions, unravelling narratives, and
encapsulating the essence of the subject in a remarkable visual tapestry.
